It’s hard to believe I’m actually going to launch the new terradance® website. For so many years, I’ve wanted to realize this dream but only last summer did I begin to move the process forward by collaborating with my web designer, Laura Atwood. After numerous hours of brainstorming and experimenting with different ideas, we were able to finalize the design six months later. Now it’s approaching midnight on New Year’s Eve and at 12:01 AM on 1-1-12 I’m ready to send an email and Facebook message to as many people as possible to announce the website and help me spread the word about terradance®. When I incorporated Terra Dance Company in 1987, I never imagined promoting my work through a medium such as the Internet. In 1996 shortly after Arizona State University became “wired,” I posted my first website on their public server as an opportunity to explore the possibilities of interacting online and to connect people around the world. There were no tools to develop the initial site so I had to be resourceful by learning to write html and upload the document without any support. Since this was unfamiliar territory I figured I might as well build on this experience by facilitating the first online dance courses worldwide and the very first for ASU. In 1998 I make several small updates, but it was not until December 30, 2011, 13 years later, when I made the next and last change, which was to remove the site permanently from the ASU server. I was nervous to hit the delete button and had to take a deep breath to muster the courage to shed this “baggage.” So out with the old and in with new.
